Workshop Supervisor / Senior Vehicle Technician

  • Salary: £21.52 per hour PAYE (or £25.59 per hour Umbrella) 
  • Location: Barnsley 
  • Job Type: Temporary, Full-time (Minimum 3 months, extension to 6 months highly likely) 

Our client is seeking a Senior Vehicle Technician responsible for all operational aspects of the Local Authority fleet maintenance function. This role includes ensuring the delivery of the maintenance program within existing budgets, on time, and to the standard required by relevant legislation. This is a safety-critical role within the Drug & Alcohol Testing Procedure. 

Day-to-day of the role: 

  • Undertake and supervise servicing and repairs of vehicles, plant, and associated equipment to an acceptable standard in an efficient and cost-effective manner with minimal downtime. 
  • Act as Authorised Examiner Delegated Manager, manage and prepare vehicles for MOT/HGV tests. 
  • Manage a team of 14 employees and 4 apprentices, ensuring skills and capabilities match business needs, providing direction, coordination, support, guidance, and dealing with recruitment, motivation, training, welfare, and discipline issues as appropriate. 
  • Accountable for all aspects of the municipal maintenance function, including maintenance planning, quality control, equipment maintenance, and training. 
  • Assist with operational aspects of business activities, including Health and Safety and staff welfare. 
  • Provide support and contribute accurate information for both monitoring and budget purposes. 
  • Keep abreast of wider service developments and maintain knowledge of regulations, policies, and procedures specifically relating to the maintenance of municipal fleet vehicles. 

Required Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Level 3 Motor Vehicle Qualification. 
  • Willingness to achieve a Level 4 qualification within 12 months of appointment. 
  • Management qualification to level 4 is desirable. 
  • IOSH Managing Safely Certificate is desirable. 
  • Cat C driving licence. 
  • Substantial experience of managing people and resources in a multi-vehicle type fleet maintenance environment (such experience in a Local Authority fleet is desirable). 
  • Experience of fleet maintenance planning and contingency management. 
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, fleet maintenance industry, including the latest equipment and repair techniques. 
  • Skilled in motivating others, financial management, and ability to meet deadlines and customer demands to a high-quality standard.
