Purpose of the Job:

To support the Finance Manager in his role to provide accurate Management Information through an environment of strong financial control and accurate underlying financial data, including:

• Working with Fin Ops team to ensure robust P2P process is in place• Supporting the monthly management accounts, quarterly forecasting and annual budget process• Provision of variance analysis relating to revenue, overheads and capital expenditures• Systems maintenance and administration• Some Business partnering individual departments to help them achieve their financial targets• Working with the MDU Financial Controller to ensure robust financial controls are in place

The job holder will demonstrate a keen attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will have a strong academic background, ideally holding a 2:1 or above in an accounting or finance-related degree, and a clear ambition to pursue CIMA or ACCA qualifications within the next few years.

Key Activities/Accountabilities

For the first 6-12 months the successful applicant will be expected to learn all aspects of Finance starting with financial operations with activities/responsibilities listed below.

Financial Operations

• Continuous review and improvement of Fin Ops financial control environment• Support the effective Purchase to Pay process including BACS compliance• Support the accuracy of all underlying financial data through effective controls and process management• Daily / weekly / monthly cash management and balance sheet reconciliations

Alongside this the successful applicant will learn the key aspects of Management Accounts and Stakeholder Management with the below being the long-term core activities/responsibilities

Management Accounts

• Support the production of monthly Group and subsidiary management accounts and all Board packs as required• Support / maintain and review the month end timetable ensuring that deadlines are met• Provide clear overhead variance analysis, driving for brevity and relevance

Budgeting and Budget holder reporting and support

• Support the production of the quarterly forecasting and annual budgets, working closely with budget-holders;• Produce accurate balance sheet and cash flow forecasts and budgets;• Provide support at the quarterly review meetings with budget holders to ensure they meet their financial budgets and help MDU achieve its overall cost saving targets• Effective Business Partnering - Maintain regular communication with stakeholders, ensuring all parties are adequately informed of relevant financial information

Other

• Completion of Office for National Statistics returns as required• SAGE X3 and Sage Enterprise Intelligence system administration

Qualifications & Experience

• Recent graduate with 2:1 degree or above in accounting / finance related degree.• Keen to study towards a professional accountancy qualification – preferably CIMA. Must be able to readily demonstrate a commitment to qualifying• Ability to use a range of PC packages and software; must have at least intermediate level excel skills

Key Outputs/Performance Measures

• Underlying financial records are accurate and ensure clean Audit opinion• Reporting timetables for the management accounts are met• Reporting timetables for the budget and forecast process are met• Budget-holder and project reporting timetables are met• Management Information & reports are prepared to a high level of accuracy and quality
