An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Materials Scientist to join a dynamic team of chemists, materials scientists, and process engineers focused on developing high-performance of composite materials. In this role, you will deepen your expertise in advanced technologies, materials, and chemistries, and apply materials science principles to the design, characterisation, and quality control of innovative products.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead material innovation efforts by characterising key battery components and establishing correlations between material properties, composite structure, and processing performance to guide product development.
- Conduct comprehensive characterisation of the physical, mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties of composite materials, including:
- Particle size distribution and material density
- Powder and fluid rheology
- Mechanical properties (e.g., stress-strain behaviour, adhesion, dynamic mechanical analysis)
- Conductivity (powder and film), moisture content
- Thermal analysis (DSC, TGA)
- Morphology and composition (SEM, EDX)
- Chemical characterisation (FTIR, Raman spectroscopy)
- Develop and implement novel test methods to improve material characterisation and gain deeper insights into electrode material behaviour and process performance.
- Customise material testing protocols to meet customer-specific standards and support external development projects.
- Mentor and support junior team members, ensuring adherence to SOPs and upholding high analytical standards.
- Maintain full compliance with Health and Safety regulations, including the preparation of documentation, risk assessments, and process protocols.
Qualifications & Experience
- BSc, MSc, or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years' industry experience in a commercial or R&D environment
- Strong background in the characterisation of advanced functional materials
- Hands-on, practical approach with excellent organisational and time-management skills
- Demonstrated ability to link material properties with process parameters and composite performance
- Proficient in a broad range of analytical and characterisation techniques
- Excellent communication, technical writing, and presentation skills
