Long Term Futures is partnering with a nurturing and inclusive primary school in Islington that is seeking a patient and energetic SEN Teaching Assistant to work in Year 1 with a non-verbal child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The role focuses on supporting high emotional regulation needs and building engagement through structured, responsive support.

About the RoleYou will work primarily one-to-one with a pupil who experiences frequent meltdowns-though never physical-and benefits from consistent, calm support. Your day-to-day will include:

  • Providing structured 1:1 and small group instruction using sensory and visual strategies
  • Encouraging communication and independence through positive reinforcement
  • Using behaviour management tactics to de-escalate and maintain calm
  • Helping the pupil take part in classroom routines, transitions, and unstructured times
  • Collaborating with the SENCo and teaching team to adapt learning and monitor progress

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Experience supporting non-verbal children with ASD, particularly in Reception or Year 1 settings
  • A calm, proactive, and optimistic demeanour; reliable, patient, and empathetic
  • Strong behaviour support skills, including understanding of sensory strategies and non-verbal communication
  • The ability to build trust and routine for children who rely on structure and consistency
