Your new school Hays are recruiting for a job as a Full-Time SEN Teaching Assistant in Blaenau Gwent for a Special Educational Needs School which caters for pupils aged 3-16 with a variety of additional learning, emotional, and social needs, as well as challenging behaviour. This role will consist of working with a small group of students aged between 13 and 14 with complex additional learning, social, and emotional needs, supporting their engagement in lessons, their mental wellbeing, as well as avoiding / de-escalating any challenging behaviours. The pupils can be particularly challenging and may become verbally abusive upon occasion due to the emotional support they require. Therefore, patience, empathy, and understanding are crucial elements of the role. The staff are passionate about their work and are there to support students and fellow staff members alike. Your new roleThe role is confirmed long-term for an immediate start, working 5 days a week. Duties relating to this role include but are not limited to:

  • Working with a small group of students with complex additional needs.
  • Offering ad-hoc 1:1 support to students.
  • Demonstrating high levels of patience and empathy when dealing with challenging behaviour.
  • Offering support to students with a wide range of sometimes severe learning difficulties.
  • Creating and maintaining a safe, positive, and enjoyable learning environment even when placed under pressure.
  • Working closely as part of a quick, efficient, and consistent team with other members of the teaching staff to provide the best care possible for the pupils.
  • Assisting teachers when implementing their lesson plans by ensuring that the children are engaged and cared for throughout.

What you'll need to succeed To be considered for this role, it is required that you possess at least 40 days of relevant experience working or volunteering within a school or with children over the course of the last 2 - 3 years. Some of the key attributes and skills needed for this role include empathy, patience, and calmness. Further desired traits include responsiveness, problem-solving skills, commitment, and a high degree of motivation. A desired qualification is to be Team Teach trained. Experience working with challenging behaviour or additional learning needs is desirable within this setting.
