Job Purpose:
To support the learning, development, and well-being of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) within the Area Resource Base (ARB). The role involves working closely with teaching staff, therapists, and other professionals to provide a nurturing, inclusive, and structured environment that enables pupils to thrive both academically and socially.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide tailored support to pupils with a range of complex needs, including autism, communication difficulties, sensory processing needs, and learning disabilities.
- Assist the class teacher in planning, delivering, and adapting lessons to meet individual learning goals.
- Support pupils in accessing the curriculum through differentiated activities and resources.
- Promote positive behaviour and emotional regulation using consistent strategies and de-escalation techniques.
- Foster independence, confidence, and social interaction through structured routines and targeted interventions.
- Work collaboratively with external professionals (e.g., speech and language therapists, occupational therapists) to implement individual support plans.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, contributing to reviews and assessments.
- Support pupils during transitions, including arrival, break times, and integration into mainstream classes where appropriate.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and stimulating learning environment.
- Uphold safeguarding procedures and promote the welfare of all pupils.
Person Specification:
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND.
- Understanding of autism and other neurodiverse conditions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and flexible in a dynamic environment.
- Commitment to inclusive education and equal opportunities.
Desirable:
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant, CACHE, or equivalent).
- Experience in an ARB, special school, or similar setting.
- Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, or other communication systems.
- Team Teach or other behaviour management training.
