Hays are excited to collaborate with The North British Distillery in seeking an experienced and driven Procurement Manager. This role offers the unique opportunity to impact the company's direction through strategic procurement initiatives.Founded in 1885, The North British Distillery was born from the vision of independent distillers. Today, they stand as the only Grain Scotch Whisky distillery in Edinburgh. Renowned as one of the most venerable and substantial producers of Scotch grain whisky, their essence lies in the distillation and maturation of grain spirit, the cornerstone of blended whisky. Their product can be found in many well-known international blends such as Johnnie Walker and Famous Grouse. Drawing from the Pentland water source, they encompass the spirit of Scotland with a global footprint.

In 2023, they celebrated their heritage with a special release of 60-year-old single grain Scotch whisky, presented in a distinctive packaging. Each bottle was meticulously hand-filled into a refined, wax-sealed decanter and encased in an exquisite moleskin coffret, accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity. This initiative aims to reach £60,000 for each of the three charities they support: Big Hearts, Scottish Autism, and Four Square.

Reporting directly to the Finance Director, you will have the autonomy to shape the role and influence the overall procurement function. Your responsibilities will span across various areas, including strategic sourcing, cost optimisation, and stakeholder engagement. You will oversee the entire procurement process on behalf of the company, ensuring efficient and effective purchasing practices. Identifying and supporting cost-saving opportunities within both direct and indirect expenditure will be a core part of your role.

You will drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimise procurement processes, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness. Responsible for strategic sourcing, you will collaborate with suppliers and negotiate favourable terms, deliver tangible savings by implementing best practices across a range of market areas, and as the key point of contact you will collaborate closely with stakeholders at all levels, providing expert advice and adding value.Your responsibilities will include but not be limited to the below:

  • Working as part of a team to ensure that all activities on site are conducted in accordance with the relevant work instruction, adhering to the necessary Company health, safety and environmental requirements and complying with all current regulatory legislation to maintain a safe working environment for all employees
  • Maintaining awareness of the regulatory and Company standards that apply for the role such as HMRC, COMAH and H&S. COMAH specific - Understand and act in accordance with the Site Emergency Response Plan in the event of an evacuation or major incident, and regularly participate in COMAH improvement activity
  • Assess requirements for the business and implement/update appropriate procurement systems in order to deliver the strategic aims of the company
  • A leading figure in the identification, implementation and operation of a new electronic purchase order system which will generates meaningful data, links with the finance system (Sun Accounts) and engineering system (Maximo). It will provide strong controls and provide a positive user experience.
  • Negotiating, maintaining, and developing key supply contracts. Including negotiating pricing to ensure cost-effectiveness
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand their procurement requirements and develop sourcing strategies. Key relationships across the business include; Finance team, Health and Safety team, Site Leadership teams x 2 (Edinburgh Distillery and Muirhall Warehousing), Engineering team and individual budget holders.
  • Review and consolidate existing suppliers, vendors, and contractors
  • Responsible for contractor management, including ensuring suppliers are compliant with current legislation
  • Sourcing and on-boarding of new suppliers, including conducting due diligence and appropriate evaluation prior to approval
  • Ensuring all procurement activities are compliant within legislation, policy, and procedure
  • Advise the company and deliver on all aspects of an appropriate best practice procurement strategy
  • Conduct periodic supplier performance reviews with contract owners and take ownership of commercial obligations concerning all such contracts
  • Where appropriate, and if necessary, negotiate service agreements with single-source suppliers
  • Develop a sustainable supply chain
