Job Title: Mechanical Field Engineer

About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Field Engineer to join a dynamic engineering team based in Bedford. This hybrid role combines hands-on service and repair work with mechanical assembly, offering variety and challenge for a skilled engineer who enjoys both fieldwork and workshop-based tasks.
You’ll be responsible for managing customer repairs, diagnosing faults, performing maintenance, and ensuring optimal performance of industrial braking systems, clutches, and couplings. When not on-site, you’ll support the assembly of mechanical products to high standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesService & Repair
- Manage customer returns and repairs to meet delivery targets and sales goals.
- Inspect and report on returned units, including parts and labour costings.
- Rebuild units to “as new” condition and carry out service work on-site and in-house.
- Support commissioning, sales, and engineering teams with technical service.
- Contribute to quality assurance processes and ISO9001 compliance.
Assembly
- Select and prepare kits for assembly based on production priorities.
- Assemble and test mechanical products using technical drawings and instructions.
- Operate overhead gantry cranes and ensure safe handling of large components.
- Maintain cleanliness, safety, and order in the work area.
- Report any issues with components, tools, or equipment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and ISO standards.
Mechanical Field Engineer - Skills & Experience
We’re looking for someone with:
- Mechanical/hydraulic service and maintenance engineering experience.
- Ability to work independently on customer sites and manage workload.
- Proficiency in producing technical reports (MS Word & Excel).
- Experience working from engineering drawings.
- Strong manual dexterity and attention to detail.
- Assembly and testing experience.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
- A proactive, flexible, and team-oriented approach.
