We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Band 8a/8b Biomedical Scientist to join a busy Histopathology department in the West Midlands, specialising in tissue dissection and specimen preparation. Key Responsibilities:
Performing specialist dissection of a wide range of surgical specimens, in line with departmental SOPs.
Operating and overseeing specialist histopathology equipment including grossing workstations, tissue processors, microtomes, and digital pathology systems.
Ensuring high standards of quality assurance, with active participation in internal quality control (IQC), external quality assessment (EQA), and compliance with UKAS and ISO 15189 accreditation standards.
Validating and authorising histology results in collaboration with consultant pathologists, ensuring timely and accurate diagnostic reporting.
Working closely with pathology, surgical, and clinical teams to ensure that specimen handling and reporting meets patient care needs.
Maintaining clear and accurate records in line with legal, regulatory, and trust policies.
Requirements & Qualifications:
HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
Extensive NHS experience in a Histology/Histopathology laboratory, with demonstrable competence in tissue dissection.
Completion of the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection (required for Band 8a; Band 8b candidates may also require evidence of service leadership or management).
In-depth understanding of laboratory quality systems, health and safety procedures, and SOP development.
Evidence of leadership, supervision or management experience within a histology setting.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
Full-time availability (please note: we are currently unable to offer sponsorship for this role).
Working Hours & Contract DurationThis is a full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week across a Monday to Friday rota. The contract is ongoing with the possibility of extension based on performance and service requirements.
