Academic Support Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated Academic Support Assistant to join our team, ensuring that students with additional needs receive a positive and supported learning experience. This role is crucial in enabling students with additional needs to successfully complete their programme of study by providing support individually or in small groups in conjunction with teaching staff.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Work under the direction of teaching staff (class tutors and specialist practitioners) to provide high-quality specialist support, including areas such as English and maths, support for learners with Autism, and/or support for learners with specific learning disabilities.
- Encourage and support students to develop their skills in working independently.
- Provide necessary support during teaching sessions, including helping students to interpret notes, checking understanding of vocabulary, and recapping learning.
- Offer tailored support outside of the classroom as required; this may include support sessions in the Study Centre.
- Develop strategies to support student organisational skills, such as prioritising tasks to meet assignment deadlines.
- Work flexibly in supporting and preparing students for exams of all types; act as a reader, scribe, or invigilator, and, following training, may set up exams independently.
- Undertake mandatory training relevant to the role and attend training sessions before the start of the term as required.
- Complete administrative duties as required, such as writing up session reviews, contributing to annual reviews, and recording progress using online systems like Pro Monitor.
- Provide personal care as required, in line with risk assessments outlined in the student’s medical or personal care support plan, following appropriate training and in a manner that preserves the dignity of the student.
- Work with students with a variety of medical needs as required, in line with the risk assessment outlined in the student’s medical IHCP.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- GCSE 4-9 (or equivalent Level 2) in English and Maths.
- Experience using online record-keeping systems.
- Effective use of email and online calendar systems.
- Experience engaging with a range of individuals at all ages and academic levels.
- Understanding of additional learning needs and disabilities.
- Broad knowledge of both academic and vocational curriculum and delivery models.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Zoom.
- Knowledge of safeguarding principles.
