Learning Mentor with SEND Experience – Primary School in Heckmondwike

About the role:

Engage Education is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Learning Mentor to join a fantastic primary school in Heckmondwike. This is a temporary role starting ASAP, supporting pupils across KS1 and KS2 with behavioural, emotional, social, and learning needs.

The school is looking for someone motivated, compassionate, and confident in working with children who may display challenging behaviour. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in pupils’ progress, wellbeing, and engagement.

Key responsibilities of a Learning Mentor include:

  • Providing behavioural, emotional, and social support to pupils with SEND.
  • Supporting learning across KS1 and KS2 both in small groups and 1:1.
  • Challenging behaviour in a calm, positive, and non-judgemental way.
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils and staff.
  • Supporting in class where needed and working closely with the SLT (Senior Leadership Team).
  • Using de-escalation techniques to defuse situations effectively.

The ideal Learning Mentor will have:

  • Previous experience working with SEND pupils in a school or similar setting.
  • Strong motivation and resilience to support children with additional needs.
  • The ability to empathise, remain calm under pressure, and manage behaviour positively.
  • A Level 2 or 3 support staff qualification (desirable).
  • Team Teach training is desirable but not essential.
