Job Application - Housing Allocations and Advice Officer
Overview of Role:As a Housing Allocations and Advice Officer, I am responsible for assessing and managing applications to the housing register, including renewals, and ensuring that all cases are accurately processed and up to date. My work includes determining eligibility, providing tailored housing advice, and activating applications for those who qualify.
Key Responsibilities:
Assessment and Advice:
Evaluate new and existing housing register applications, including medical assessments for housing priority.
Determine eligibility, effective date, level of preference, and any special factors.
Advise ineligible applicants on alternative housing options and ensure decisions are communicated clearly.
Provide comprehensive housing advice aligned with current policy and legislation.
Allocations and Lettings:
Coordinate advertising of vacant properties with Choice Homes UK and other partners.
Allocate homes using shortlist analysis and direct matching, including for vulnerable applicants with specific needs (e.g., medical, under-occupiers, hospital discharges).
Verify applicant information through interviews, home visits, financial checks, and local connection reviews.
Support temporary accommodation placements and private rented sector offers (PRSOs), including interviews and refusal processes.
Housing Options and Prevention:
Advise on alternative housing schemes such as Homefinder, Seaside and Country Homes, and mutual exchanges.
Allocate temporary and prevention accommodation under relevant policies.
Refer households to appropriate support services for tenancy sustainment and specialist advice.
Systems and Record-Keeping:
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on housing systems and customer files.
Use electronic systems to support allocations and homelessness case management.
Ensure a full audit trail of activity and decisions.
Communication and Partnerships:
Build effective relationships with internal teams, registered providers, health and social care services, and third-sector partners.
Respond to enquiries, complaints, and correspondence from applicants, advocates, elected officials, and legal representatives.
Represent the team in meetings and contribute to the development of internal procedures and public-facing materials.
Performance and Compliance:
Ensure all actions comply with statutory duties under the Housing Act 1996 (Part VI), Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, Children Act, and Care Act.
Meet performance targets relating to void turnaround, prevention placements, and reducing B&B stays over 6 weeks.
Maintain high standards of customer service and contribute to service development through feedback and innovation.
