JOB TITLE: HOUSING DISREPAIR PARALEGAL
SALARY: £25,000 - £26,000
HOURS OF WORK: 9am – 5.30pm

We are seeking a capable and driven individual to join our team as a Housing Disrepair Paralegal. You will be responsible for managing a caseload from instruction through to settlement. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable experience in housing disrepair claims and the ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Main Purpose of the role:
Reporting directly to the fee earners, provide support to him/her and to the team as directed
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Handle a full caseload of housing disrepair matters from instruction to resolution, including litigated claims.
- Manage cases independently from instruction to settlement.
- Liaise with clients, landlords, solicitors, and other stakeholders to ensure effective and professional communication.
- Build strong client relationships through consistent communication and quality service delivery.
- Attend client meetings and assist in preparation for court hearings.
- Collaborate with internal teams and contribute to smooth departmental operations.
- Support wider business initiatives as required.
- Draft legal documents, including letters of claim, court forms, and pleadings, in compliance with court rules and deadlines.
- Prepare witness statements and legal advice documents.
- Issue court proceedings and manage files through litigation to conclusion.
- Prepare and quantify special damages in accordance with the Pre-Action Protocol for Housing Disrepair.
- Conduct legal research and gather evidence to support claims.
- Review incoming documentation related to cases, including housing records and surveyors’ reports.
- Assess liability based on a thorough analysis of evidence for both Claimant and Defendant positions.
- Review and prepare witness statements and supporting documentation.
- Negotiate settlements with defendants, solicitors, and counsel.
- Participate in mediations and liaise with counsel as needed.
- Maintain confidence and professionalism when representing clients in dispute resolution matters.
- Maintain accurate records and case notes in compliance with legal standards.
- Use case management systems (e.g. Proclaim) effectively and in line with internal procedures.
- Process case files efficiently and ensure deadlines are met.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
- You must have previous housing disrepair experience, including having dealt with litigated matters.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong client communication skills.
- Previous experience in Housing Disrepair is essential; candidates with 3–5+ years in contentious civil litigation will also be considered.

- Ability to manage a busy caseload with competing demands and deadlines.
- Solid litigation experience and sound knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Landlord & Tenant Act.

- Strong written and verbal communication, with a client-focused and empathetic approach.
- Proactive, adaptable, and calm under pressure, with good problem-solving abilities.
