Head of Payroll - Headstar : Job Details

You need to be able to own payroll across the UK, Ireland, and the Channel Islands like it's your name on every payslip.

Working for a business based in York, you'll be managing multiple regions, different pay frequencies (weekly, fortnightly, monthly), and legislation that keeps changing just to make sure you're paying attention.

job is to lead the function, fix what's broken, streamline what's clunky, and make sure we stay the right side of compliance while still getting everyone paid correctly and on time.

What You'll Actually Be Doing:

• Owning the end-to-end payroll process alongside your Payroll Manager
• Keeping us compliant across the UK, Ireland and the Channel Islands
• Managing audits, reconciliations and reports and making sure external auditors aren't asking awkward questions
• Working with the People team so policies and payroll processes actually talk to each other
• Leading process improvement (actual improvement, not just giving something a new name and calling it "innovation")
• Staying on top of legislation and helping the business stay ahead of the curve
• Being the voice of Payroll on cross-functional projects
• Leading your team without micromanaging, but mentoring and supporting

What We Need from You:

• CIPP-accredited (because knowing what you're doing is kind of important)
• You've either led payroll in a large organisation or worked across multiple SMEs where you were the go-to person
• You've managed people before
• You've used Dayforce and lived to tell the tale
• You're the kind of person who can hold your own in a conversation with Finance, HR and IT and speak their language when needed
• You understand the difference between "urgent" and "important"
• You can keep a secret
