About the role:

We are looking for a keen and enthusiastic Handyperson to join our team at Lambeth Hospital working as part of a team to perform the activities of general maintenance and plumbing maintenance. No formal qualifications are required, however experience in one or more of the main duties of the post is essential. The main area of work is the Bethlem Royal Hospital and Croydon community properties. The properties comprise of forensic and non-forensic in-patient wards, day patient wards, outpatients' services, general administration and a variety of clinical and non-clinical departments.

Applicants should be physically fit and have good communication skills and be capable of working on their own initiative and to undertake planned preventative general building duties for a trust that provide the widest range of NHS mental health services in the UK.

Key responsibilities include:

  • To undertake planned preventative maintenance or emergency work as demanded by a hospital of this type; general plumbing maintenance, painting & decorating, door repairs (carpentry), glazing fire compliance checking, brick laying plastering and making good.
  • When required to be able to set out small tasks, i.e., to be able to set up, prepare and execute all small maintenance work unsupervised and on own initiative.
  • To be able to assist with design and fixing of all site signage wayfinding.
  • To provide a maintenance service to all Trust buildings, off site properties and be able to work unsupervised. To have a flexible approach to the work and be able to work beyond the normal hours of duty if required and to carry out other tasks from the other sections should circumstances so dictate. To take part in the on-call rota if required.
  • To keep up to date with any new legislation and attend training courses as directed by E&F Manager. To be able to work safely in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act, and to follow any other safety policies or guidelines as issued by the Trust.
  • To be able to assist in maintenance of the site, including sweeping, emptying of waste containers and clearing snow.
  • To be able to understand and deal with people with mental health problems when you are working in an occupied patient area. To always respect confidentiality.

You'll have the following skills/experience:

  • NHS experience in a similar role, must also have general plumbing experience.
  • Full Driving licence.
  • Health & Safety Knowledge and training in the use of tools and equipment related to this role.
  • Good knowledge of all mechanical/electrical related trades especially drainage/sanitary ware repairs.
  • To be able to work in occupied areas safely and conduct oneself in a manner that preserves the dignity and respect due to patients.
  • Certificated to be able to work of scaffolding and ladders and work in confined spaces safely, Health & Safety awareness training, manual handling certificate, Abrasive wheel certificate desirable but not essential.
  • To have knowledge in the correct way of storing volatile materials and to recognise the correct materials for the building fabric repair desirable but not essential.
