The position of Grounds Person is to work individually and as part of a small team to maintain the Universities grounds to a high standard, using modern equipment. The work is to be carried out with the minimal disruption to sites, buildings, staff, and students.

The purpose of the role is to assist and maintain the Universities grounds and gardens in all aspects of maintenance and keep the sites clean, tidy, safe and to a high standard. In the absence of the senior grounds supervisor the role holder will supervise the work schedule including other staff as and when required.

Other areas that will be covered in the role include weed control, removal of fallen trees, road/pavement gritting and tree inspections after adverse weather conditions. Some of these additional areas are often covered outside normal working hours.

You will essentially be based across a few Cambridge sites which offers some variety and is dependent upon the needs of landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carries out the day-to-day ground maintenance activities including grass cutting, pruning, weeding, leaf clearing and tidying. These require the use of many different types of specialised machines and equipment.
  • Loading and unloading vehicles and trailers of machinery, equipment and waste produce at the start and end of each day.
  • Weeding using chemical applications around the sites, often outside of normal working hours.
  • Cleans and maintains all equipment, machinery, and buildings to create safe and prolonged life expectancy. This is often carried out during inclement weather.
  • Carries out gritting during the colder months as and when required, often outside of normal working hours.
  • Provide safe storage of all waste produced, keep all chemicals safely locked up and safe and keep all stock items safe and secure.
  • The role holder will be supervising other team members at G2 on a daily occurrence, as well as in the absence of the Grounds Supervisor the role holder will be responsible for the supervision of staff and contractors. This will include keeping records of chemical use, ordering materials, and ensuring plant and equipment is kept and used safely.

Essential Experience

  • Experience in the grounds and gardening environment, using various items of gardening machinery and equipment.
  • Experience using and applying chemicals for the treatment of weeds.
  • Use of ride on machinery for example mowers.
  • Application of chemicals in the spraying and spot treatments.
  • Prepared when required to work outside normal working hours to carry out tasks that are better suited when no staff or students are around. (Desirable)
  • A full driving licence (Essential)

Hours: Monday - Friday 36.5 hours per week.
