The Opportunity

This would suit a commercially aware, ambitious and modern-thinking FD looking to be part of a growth story.

This is a game-changing opportunity to be part of a build journey within an ambitious and forward-thinking SME. The business is currently in the £13m turnover region and is gunning down £30m+ through organic expansion and acquisition in the next 3 years.

You’ll join the executive board as FD / CFO - working closely with the aspirational and highly capable business owner / Group MD.

It’s a pivotal hire - you’ll join as a hands-on FD within an agile and exciting SME. You’ll be the right-hand-person to the Group MD and become part of the fabric of the business. It will be an exciting ride and there is clear appetite to invest in well-managed rapid growth and expansion.

It’ll be sleeves rolled up from the outset and not for someone who just wants to glare down from their ivory tower!! But with that said it is definitely strategically focused - you’ll be a key voice -- challenging the status quo where required and influencing decision making within the C suite.

This is an FD role which is right in the thick of the action. You will work extremely closely with the owner and the talented senior management team. As the primary finance contact for the group, you will be an absolutely vital sounding board for key strategic decision making, ongoing financial management, reporting and leadership.

You will:

• Manage the full finance function and your role is all encompassing - monthly presentation of accounts and associated MI, year end and audit management, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, due diligence and acquisition targeting, project accounting… all aspects - kit and caboodle. You’ll be enhancing controls and the commercial pack and providing robust financial guidance.
• Be involved in acquisition targeting, completion and mergers (and all of the DD in between!).
• Be a key sounding board to the Group MD.
• Manage a small team (3) -- ultimately the full train set is yours and the directors will welcome new ideas and new ways of working from a fresh set of eyes.

The business is agile and highly aspirational, and you will work with an infectiously enthusiastic and driven owner. You will no doubt be involved in projects focused on managing expansion and the associated growing pains.

What the business is looking for

This is a hands-on role. You need that balance of strategic awareness coupled with a willingness to get into the regular and routine detail.

You will need:

• A completed relevant professional qualification (ACA / ACCA or CIMA)
• To be looking for a number 1 role within a diverse SME group.
• To be able to confidently demonstrate a track record of success in the role of FD within a business that has a reasonable degree of complexity.
• M&A experience would be super useful.
• To have a hands-on approach and be comfortable digging down into the nitty gritty where required.
• To be able to coach others.
• To be someone who prides themselves on integrating finance into an ambitious SME. Someone who can build a bridge between finance and the rest of the business.
• To be confident in your ability to build / manage close working relationships with external stakeholders (banks / insurers / auditors).
• To be comfortable working really closely with (and presenting to) the business owners / senior leadership team.
• To be someone with a real passion for business who will take pride in being on the journey with the group.
• Experience of a similar growth SME environment would be a major advantage. Construction or sub-contracting experience would be beneficial.
• You will be someone confident working under your own steam to meet deadlines and manage projects alongside your business-as-usual reporting timeframes.
