Our client, a national law firm, are recruiting for an ambitious Family Solicitor to be Head of Department for their office in London or Birmingham.
This is a rare opportunity to take on a senior leadership role with scope to shape the team, drive growth, and manage a diverse caseload with a strong focus on privately funded and Legal Aid Agency (LAA) matters.
Overview
You’ll be responsible for leading a well-established team, overseeing casework quality, and playing a central role in departmental development. The ideal candidate will have experience handling private children law cases and family finance, alongside familiarity with publicly funded work.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and manage the Family Law department, ensuring high standards of client care, compliance, and performance
• Handle your own caseload, with an emphasis on private children matters and selected Legal Aid cases
• Oversee and support junior solicitors and legal staff, offering mentorship and quality control
• Engage in business development initiatives to grow the firm’s private family law offering
• Maintain and build strong relationships with external partners, referrers, and professional networks
• Ensure compliance with LAA billing procedures, funding regulations, and internal protocols
Requirements
• Qualified Solicitor with 5+ years PQE in Family Law
• Extensive experience with both privately funded and LAA family matters
• Strong background in private children law (e.g., residence, contact, relocation)
• Prior experience supervising or managing legal teams
• Excellent understanding of LAA billing, compliance, and cost management
• Confident communicator with strategic thinking and leadership capability
• Panel membership (Resolution, Law Society Family Panel) is highly desirable
Desirable
• Existing network or client base in the Birmingham or London regions
• Experience in developing or expanding a legal team or service line
