What's the role about?

We are looking for someone with bags of enthusiasm who can manage our engagement activities on Orkney. Based in Stromness you will market and run activities and events across the islands, working with partners, businesses, staff and volunteers to inform people about wildlife and the work of RSPB Scotland, inspiring them to support our work. An excellent communicator, you will have a proven record of working with partners with the skills and abilities to influence a wide range of stakeholders. You must be able to work either alone or as part of a small busy team and manage the education output of the team through the Outdoor Learning Officer. Key deliverables of the role are:

  • Develop and implement a programme of activities that raise awareness and understanding of the RSPB within Orkney that build a high level of community support.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local partners to deliver partnership events across the islands .
  • Responsible for producing clear, succinct, targeted, and on-brand messages from complex work areas to support the delivery of key RSPB local and UK wide objectives.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local contacts and partners in order to increase promotion opportunities for events and reserves.
  • Co-ordinate, produce and develop content on RSPB activities in Orkney to increase profile locally and meet the RSPB’s objectives.
  • Develop and support a volunteer team to achieve agreed objectives and targets and ensure that all volunteers receive an excellent volunteering experience.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Event organisation, delivery and review experience for events with up to 100 participants.
  • Demonstrable experience of working in partnership with other organisations to deliver events and aligned communications.
  • Good understanding of the principles of effective media relations knowledge, as demonstrated by training and work successes and demonstrable examples of coverage achieved.
  • Ability to communicate - listening, written and verbal. Able to communicate complex topics in a clear manner at all levels to develop shared understanding.
  • Ability to summarise complex information
  • Strong social and interpersonal skills, with the gravitas to influence internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent planning and prioritisation skills, combined with the ability to meet tight deadlines and handle unanticipated workloads.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing engaging events and stories from briefings or background information on a wide variety of topics.
  • Relevant experience of recruiting and managing volunteers and/or staff

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • An ability to understand and mitigate issues that may give rise to reputational damage
  • Understanding of how to integrate wildlife conservation into educational learning
