Overview

We're looking for a skilled and proactive Estimator to join our team on a contract basis in Scotland. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the rail sector, specifically with large-scale infrastructure projects. You'll be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive tenders, ensuring all project costs are meticulously calculated and presented. This is a crucial role that requires a keen eye for detail, strong analytic skills, and a deep understanding of the rail industry.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tender Preparation: Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for bids and tenders, particularly for large-scale rail infrastructure projects. This includes reviewing and interpreting project drawings, specifications, and other tender documents.

  • Cost Analysis: Analyse project requirements and break down costs for materials, labour, plant, and subcontractors. Identify potential risks and opportunities that may impact project costs.

  • Subcontractor Engagement: Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to obtain competitive quotes and ensure all submissions align with project specifications.

  • Documentation: Create comprehensive reports and documentation to support all estimations, providing clear and concise breakdowns for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the project management, commercial, and engineering teams to ensure all estimates are aligned with project goals and technical requirements.

  • Market Awareness: Stay up-to-date with current market trends, pricing, and industry standards to ensure all estimates are realistic and competitive.

Required Skills & Experience
  • Proven Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience as an Estimator, with a significant background in the UK rail industry.

  • Sector Expertise: In-depth knowledge of rail infrastructure projects, including track, signalling, civils, and electrification.

  • Technical Proficiency: Strong IT skills, including proficiency with estimating software and Microsoft Excel.

  • Analytical Skills: Excellent numerical and analytic abilities, with a meticulous approach to data and figures.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively.

  • Problem-Solving: A proactive approach to identifying and resolving potential issues during the estimation process.

  • Qualifications: Relevant qualifications in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, or a related field are highly desirable.
