Are you an experienced finance professional looking for your next challenge in local government? Allen Lane is delighted to be supporting a London Authority in their search for a Deputy Chief Accountant to join their Corporate Accountancy Finance team to play a key role in delivering the Council’s financial strategy on a permanent basis.

Reporting directly into the Chief Accountant, this vital role will take the lead on delivering the Council’s annual Statement of Accounts, ensuring robust accounting controls, and maintaining a strong relationship with external auditors.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Supporting the Chief Accountant across a range of corporate finance functions, particularly in Technical Accounting, Fixed Assets, and Taxation.
  • Leading on areas such as Financial Statements, Balance Sheet Reconciliations, financial controls, and offering guidance across council services.
  • Managing and strengthening the relationship with external auditors and acting as a key liaison between them and the wider finance team.
  • Ensuring compliance with IFRS and CIPFA’s Code of Practice for Local Government Accounting.
  • Developing and improving finance processes and ensuring effective knowledge transfer and staff training.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re looking for a fully qualified CCAB or CIMA accountant with:

  • Strong technical accounting skills and experience in the closure of accounts and audit processes.
  • Excellent analytical and advanced Excel skills.
  • Confidence in written and verbal communication with stakeholders at all levels.
  • A proactive mindset and the ability to drive improvements in financial support across the Council.
