Purpose of the Role:
We are seeking a highly experienced contractor with deep expertise in energy markets, commercial strategy, and stakeholder engagement to lead a strategic review and refresh of our energy procurement and trading approach. This role will be pivotal in shaping future energy contracting models, ensuring financial robustness, and aligning with sustainability goals.
The core deliverable of this interim role is to produce a trading strategy options, and timeline to refresh and/or change the existing advisory/agency contract.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Assessment & Advisory
- Evaluate the current day-ahead and hedged energy strategy, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.
- Analyse market and risk factor changes since the strategy’s inception, providing recommendations for adaptation.
- Review the existing consultancy delivery model and assess alternative models (e.g., agency-based), including risk mitigation and exit strategies.
- Conduct early market engagement with potential service providers and assess suitability for future delivery.
- Benchmark against peer institutions and other comparable organisations with similar estate profiles and energy volumes, including delivery models and average pricing.
Commercial & Contractual Oversight
- Refresh and align trading principles to seasonal trading cycles and market conditions.
- Extend existing power and gas contracts, recommending a rolling term structure to optimise flexibility and value.
- Define and explain contract transfer principles to support future delivery models.
- Review the suitability and potential of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for long-term energy sourcing.
Sustainability & Funding
- Identify and assess opportunities for green funding and energy grants, aligned to different delivery models and strategic goals.
Required Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience in UK energy markets, including trading, procurement, and regulatory frameworks.
- Strong financial acumen, with the ability to model scenarios, assess risk, and advise on commercial decisions.
- Demonstrated gravitas and credibility to engage and influence senior boards and committees.
- Experience in contract negotiation and extension, particularly in energy supply and trading.
- Familiarity with green energy funding, PPAs, and sustainability-linked financial instruments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Desirable:
- Experience working with large institutional estates.
- Knowledge of energy consultancy models and agency-based service delivery.
- Understanding of carbon reduction strategies and net-zero planning.
Candidate Requirements:
- Must have experience of the energy markets
- Proven track record in navigating UK and/or international energy markets, including trading, procurement, regulatory frameworks, and commercial strategy.
- Must have gravitas to pitch to senior boards/committees
- Demonstrated ability to engage and influence executive-level stakeholders, present complex information clearly, and drive strategic decision-making.
- Must be financially competent
- Strong financial acumen with experience in commercial modelling, investment appraisal, and risk analysis within the energy sector.
