Biodiversity Monitoring Officer

Join the local authority in Sheffield as a Biodiversity Monitoring Officer. This role is crucial in supporting the Ecology Team to monitor and enhance biodiversity across the city. You will be managing casual staff, volunteers, and other assigned personnel, making a significant impact on local wildlife conservation.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Survey Local Wildlife Sites (LWS) to assess biodiversity levels.
- Collaborate with landowners, managers, and community groups to collect essential biological data.
- Conduct research on land ownership, usage, and access rights.
- Collect and analyse ecological data to aid nature recovery and support funding applications.
- Contribute biodiversity information for City Council site management plans.
- Assist in the operation of the Biological Records Centre and support its users.
- Train staff and volunteers in effective biodiversity monitoring techniques.
- Promote biodiversity awareness within the Council and to the broader public.
- Provide cover for other Ecology team members as necessary.
- Manage budgets and resources efficiently, ensuring compliance with legal and safety standards.
- Adhere to Council policies and Business Continuity Plans.
- Perform additional duties as agreed with your manager.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong plant identification skills and familiarity with biodiversity monitoring methods.
- Experience with GIS and biological record software such as Recorder.
- Understanding of health and safety protocols in ecological work.
- Proven experience working with volunteers and community groups.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both field and office settings.
- Strong skills in report writing and data analysis.
- Organised and methodical approach to data management.
- Good IT skills, particularly in a Windows environment.
- Degree in ecology or a related field, plus at least 2 years of relevant experience.
- A clean driving license is beneficial.
