Automation Technician – Electrical Control SystemsA long-established engineering and manufacturing company based in Essex is seeking to appoint an automation technician to join its specialist electrical and automation department. Operating from a modern design and production facility, the business designs and assembles complete filling and packaging lines, with a strong focus on pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.This role offers a dynamic and varied workload, working on highly engineered systems that combine automation, electrical design, PLC programming, and mechanical integration. You will be involved from design through to commissioning, both in-house and on customer sites around the world.Key responsibilities
- Design and specification of PLC-based control systems from customer or internal design briefs
- Programming of PLCs, HMIs, and safety relays, including configuration of I/O and drive systems
- Build and test of control panels in collaboration with internal panel builders and electricians
- Integration of ancillary equipment such as vision systems, servo motors, inverters, and SCADA systems
- Electrical fault-finding across PLC and hardwired systems
- Support and commissioning of machinery both at the Essex facility and at international customer sites
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including assembly, documentation, and service
Essential requirements
- Formal electrical engineering qualification (e.g. apprenticeship or equivalent)
- Strong understanding of electrical drawings, panel design, and wiring
- Experience with PLC programming, HMI configuration, and automated controls
- Knowledge of servo motor and inverter drive systems
- Willingness to travel for commissioning and service support worldwide
- Comfortable working across both workshop and live production environments
Desirable experience
- Exposure to pharmaceutical manufacturing or hazardous area regulations (e.g. ATEX)
- Familiarity with vision systems, safety systems, and SCADA integration
