A leading regional firm is seeking an experienced Audit Manager to join its Audit & Assurance team in Newbury, Oxford, or Reading. This is a key leadership role, responsible for managing a substantial and varied client portfolio, overseeing audit planning and delivery, and ensuring compliance with audit standards and deadlines.

The successful candidate will have proven experience at manager level, strong technical knowledge, and the ability to mentor and develop junior staff. The role also offers the opportunity to contribute to business development through client relationship management and involvement in proposals and presentations. Responsibilities:

  • Manage assignments in line with the firm’s standard procedures, confirming arrangements with clients including scope, costs, and billing.
  • Ensure audit quality and compliance with internal and external quality assurance standards.
  • Brief staff on client background and assignment objectives; supervise, review work, and provide on-the-job training and appraisals.
  • Monitor budgets and promptly raise any significant issues or overruns with the assignment partner and client.
  • Maintain regular client contact throughout the year, delivering high standards of client service.
  • Liaise with other departments to identify and meet broader client needs.
  • Develop knowledge of the firm’s specialist services and undertake additional client work where appropriate.
  • Lead the firm’s review and completion procedures, attend final client meetings, and ensure timely delivery of final accounts and reports.
  • Oversee ad hoc advisory projects as required.
  • Monitor work in progress, ensuring timely and profitable billing.
  • Maintain up-to-date technical knowledge and meet CPD requirements.
  • Contribute to business development through proposal writing, presentations, and participation in client seminars.
  • Act as line manager to junior team members, providing guidance and support.
  • Attend internal meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Undertake other duties in line with the scope and responsibilities of the role as requested by senior management.

Personal and professional qualities:

  • Candidates must be ACA or ACCA qualified.
  • Previous experience operating at manager level in a similar role.
  • Proven experience in managing a portfolio of clients and developing strong client relationships.
  • Proven wide audit experience in producing high quality audits.
  • Audit experience within the SME sector would be advantageous.
  • Charity experience is also desirable but not essential.
  • Business development experience and interest would be a distinct advantage
