The Position & Key Responsibilities

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Associate to join our Structures team to help deliver design, maintenance, and engineering services. You will help grow a team and the business, and work on projects across the UK. This will enable you to advance your career, whilst giving you the freedom to achieve personal growth and development.

We are looking for a professionally accredited [IEng or CEng] engineer with at least 8 years' experience.

The role can be based in either our Edinburgh or Manchester office.

  • Grow and maintain relationships with existing and new clients to influence and impact the growth and direction of the business.
  • Maintain and improve financial targets including labour revenue, sales rate etc.
  • Development and delivery of concept, preliminary & detailed structure designs and inspections
  • Detailed technical knowledge of structures design, assessment, maintenance, and inspection.
  • Preparation, checking, and verification of calculations, written reports, and drawings.
  • Providing technical leadership and support to junior colleagues
  • Asset management of client highway structures and development of investment plans
  • Project, commercial, and programme management and commercial implementation of project change
  • Promote sustainability and the use of sustainability assessment tools for projects.
  • Managing H&S and planning of site visits, inspections, and intrusive investigations
  • Execution of CDM duties and acting as Principal Designer
  • Management of client accounts
  • Contribute to the business strategy and plan.
  • Assist with the growth of the structures team in the North region.
  • To contribute towards tender process and bidding of projects and frameworks

Person specification

  • Accredited Masters or Bachelors degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered or Incorporated with a relevant Institution
  • Experience of growing regional teams whilst contributing to national business development
  • Have immediate opportunities for PCL to expand the structures client base within the region and a pipeline of future opportunities.
  • Adept at working and leading a design team environment.
  • Be technically strong with a background in bridge and civil structures.
  • Proven track record of delivering designs and assessments of highway structures using British and European codes of practice.
  • Excellent knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW)
  • Self-motivated with good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Possess strong analytical ability and a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals and current technical standards.
  • Strong commercial skills and a detailed understanding of NEC and other industry forms of contract
  • Detailed knowledge of Health & Safety requirements and CDM duties
  • Excellent computer skills on Microsoft Office package including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of structural analysis and design computer programmes including MIDAS Civil, TEDDS, SBD and AutoCAD
