About the Role - 1:1 Teaching Assistant (ADHD & SEMH)

We are seeking a compassionate, emotionally resilient, and dependable 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant to support a KS3 student diagnosed with ADHD and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a highly rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in a young person’s life by providing consistency, structure, and emotional security.

This role is specifically designed to support the student on a 1:1 basis, both in and outside the classroom, helping them to maintain focus, manage daily learning tasks, and work towards increasing independence.

Key Responsibilities - 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

  • Working 1:1 with a Year 8 pupil with ADHD and SEMH needs
  • Supporting the pupil’s engagement and focus during lessons
  • Building a consistent and trusting relationship using a calm and patient approach
  • Employing behaviour support strategies aligned with the school’s trauma-informed practice
  • Encouraging independence while ensuring academic and emotional support is provided
  • Offering additional in-class support when appropriate
  • Participating in a compulsory two-week induction from 7th July, leading into a full time, long term role from September 2025

Person Specification - 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

We are looking for an individual who is caring, compassionate, emotionally resilient, and committedto supporting young people with SEN. While prior experience is welcome, the most important qualities are consistency, passion, emotional intelligence, and a willingness to learn.

  • Some experience working with children or young people with behavioural, SEN, or SEMH needs - ideal
  • A calm, emotionally intelligent, and patient demeanour
  • Possesses resilience and the capability to support students with ADHD, SEMH, and attachment difficulties
  • Strong relationship-building skills and the ability to offer consistency and support
  • The ability to maintain professional boundaries while showing empathy and care
  • A proactive, flexible and committed mindset
  • Demonstrates patience, adaptability, and teamwork, with a readiness to take initiative and engage in relevant training
  • Values reliability, punctuality, and consistency - essential traits in building trust and structure for the pupil
  • Has a genuine interest in working with children long-term, with ambitions in education, SEND, youth work, or related fields (e.g. teaching, SENDCO, Educational Psychologist)
