Position Description

DNDAs Youth Environmental Program Assistant position will directly support our Branch Out Program. Branch Out is a 10-week paid internship for seven high-school aged youth each fall and spring focused on outdoor adventure skill-building, connection with green career professionals, and environmental justice education. This program creates an environment of belonging that allows youth interns to develop the skills and confidence to flourish in outdoor recreation spaces and activities. Adventures may include hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, camping, and more. This position will provide support leading youth interns exploration of outdoor spaces through discussions, hands-on learning, and connection to community partners and green career professionals.

This position will require integrity and accountability when doing work with partners and in the community by working collaboratively with youth participants, community organizations, and staff as we serve predominately people of the global majority (Black and POC). The Youth Environmental Program Assistant will report to the Environmental Engagement Specialist.

Position Status

This is a temporary position, 9 months long starting September 1, 2025 through May 31, 2026. This position is 15 hours per week. Compensation is $25.00 per hour. This position does not include paid time off benefits or medical insurance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning, coordinating, and leading activities for Branch Out and Summer Youth Environmental Justice Programs.
  • Co-lead outdoor adventure and environmental education activities such as hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, camping, PNW native plant identification, and more.
  • Support and foster relationships with local organizations, guest speakers, and community partners.
  • Build positive, supportive relationships with youth participants, fostering a safe and inclusive environment.
  • Assist with transportation coordination, equipment preparation, material and supply preparation, site setup and cleanup, and logistical coordination.
  • Monitor and ensure youth safety at all times, following protocols and procedures.
  • Uphold DNDAs values of racial and environmental justice during all programming, engaging respectfully and effectively with participants and community partners.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of experience working with high school-aged youth.
  • Knowledge of environmental justice and outdoor education.
  • Enthusiasm participating in outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and camping.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of community groups, partners, and staff.
  • Leadership skills and confidence giving direction to youth participants.
  • Knowledge of positive youth development framework or interest in gaining experience.
  • Commitment to including and amplifying historically marginalized voices.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Comfort working on multiple projects at one time.
  • Physically able to work long days in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. and move on uneven terrain.
  • Valid drivers license and comfort driving a 15-passenger van.
  • Positive attitude, energetic personality , and sense of humor.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with, supporting, and uplifting BIPOC high school aged youth.
  • Knowledge of Pacific Northwest ecology and local watersheds.
  • Knowledge of local hiking trails, state parks, and outdoor recreation opportunities.
  • Knowledge of local environmental justice issues, especially local history and challenges throughout Seattle, the Duwamish River, and the Longfellow Creek watershed.
