Position Type: Special Education Cooperatives/Behavior Crisis Intervention Assistant Date Posted: 5/28/2025 Location: Mid-State Education District Date Available: Mid-August 2025 Closing Date: Open Until Filled District: Mid-State Education District POSITION TITLE: Behavior Support Specialist (BSS) POSITION OVERVIEW: The Behavior Support Specialist works under the supervision of a Special Education Teacher/Qualified Mental Health Professional/Behavior Interventionist/Social Worker to assist students experiencing dis-regulation (actions/behavior/language). The BSS works as part of the WIN team to achieve the program's vision and mission of helping every student be successful. The BSS works with a varying number of students in a one on one situation as well as a group/classroom setting. The BSS also works with the special education teacher, mental health staff and other staff when appropriate. PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

• Previous experience in Correctional Facility or Juvenile Detention Center preferred.
• Paraprofessional Certification, AA degree or 2 year of college, or a 4 year college degree.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Communicate, and work cooperatively with colleagues to provide appropriate intervention and programming for students and maintain a positive work environment for all.
• Implement positive behavior interventions and supports to support student progress, reinforcing positive behaviors, utilizing dis-regulation techniques, and redirecting inappropriate behaviors. May be required to use restrictive procedures.
• Support the development and implementation of individualized education plans in accordance with district practice and state and federal requirements.
• Comply with Governing Board policies and administrative practices, including those procedures outlined in the staff and student handbooks.
• Help to maintain safety of all students and the environment.
• Utilize data to inform programming decisions and planning for student success.
• Uses flexible thinking and adaptability to address student needs and responds calmly during crisis situations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication with staff, students, and parents that is maintained during high-stress and crisis situations.
• Basic computer and email skills.
• Ability to be Certified in Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI)
• Ability to be Certified Handle With Care Trainer

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds weight and up to adult-size body weight with two-to-three-person lift.
• Ability to support a student's full body weight up to adult size.
• Frequently requires standing, walking, lifting, bending, leaning, and repetitive motions.
• Occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
• Ability to tolerate sudden jarring movement.
• Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may require wearing of personal protective equipment.
• Locations are generally moderately noisy.
