Please click here for the recruitment announcement.THE DIVISIONThe City of Visalia's Wastewater Collection Division is a division of the Public Works Department that is responsible for maintaining the City's Sanitary and Storm sewer infrastructure. The Wastewater Collection Division is responsible for the maintenance and repairs of over 500 miles of sanitary sewer mains, over 350 miles of storm sewer mains, 13 sanitary sewer lift stations, 43 storm sewer lift stations, 35 miles of creeks and ditches, and 46 ponding basins. The division's staff are committed to customer service, safety, and providing high-quality services to the Public.THE POSITIONThe City is recruiting for Wastewater Maintenance Worker, an entry-level position in the Wastewater Maintenance Worker series. Under supervision, the candidate will assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of stormwater and sanitary sewer systems, including pipelines, manholes, catch basins, pump houses, and related infrastructure. Work includes performing a wide variety of skilled maintenance and construction tasks such as clearing debris from lines, CCTV inspection of sanitary and storm sewer mains, performing mechanical and manual maintenance of waterways, and using heavy equipment and tools including jet-vac trucks, jackhammers, and compressors. The Wastewater Maintenance Worker I will also be responsible for basic equipment and tool care, maintaining work records, and providing on-call emergency response during off-duty hours. This position plays a key role in preserving system integrity and ensuring proper flow capacity within the City's sewer and stormwater infrastructure.THE IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate will be a reliable and motivated individual with hands-on experience in construction or utility maintenance. They will have working knowledge of power equipment operation including trucks and utility-related machinery as well as techniques used in the maintenance of waterways, storm drains, and sanitary sewer systems. This candidate will be safety-conscious, especially when working around traffic or confined spaces, and demonstrate skill in forming and finishing concrete, performing minor pump station maintenance, and operating standard tools and equipment used in utility work. They will bring a strong work ethic, the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in outdoor environments, and a commitment to teamwork, quality service, and public safety. The candidate is required to have possession of a valid California Driver's license at time of appointment and possession of a valid Class B License with a tankers endorsement within 6 months; a valid Class A License with a tankers endorsement is desirable. Possession of ability to obtain a CWEA Wastewater Collection Grade 1 certification within 3 testing cycles, or 24 months (whichever comes first).EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAny combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skill and ability is qualifying.
