Are you age 50 and up and would like to assist young people to improve their reading skills? Join our Experience Corp program!!!

Through partnership with Elev8 Baltimore and AARP Foundation, Experience Corps is a volunteer program that trains people over 50 to tutor students to become better readers by the end of third grade. Not only is the program proven to improve students' reading skills, but it also builds critical social and emotional skills they need for successful learning now — and later in life.

What is Elev8 Baltimore

Elev8 Baltimore is a non-profit youth & community development organization serving students and families in Baltimore City. We partner with 28 school in Baltimore City and are looking for specific volunteers to become AARP Experience Corps Tutors.

What is Experience Corp

Experience Corp is a program, in partnership with AARP that matches people 50 years and older to volunteer to become tutors for an elementary child.

As a volunteer tutor you will be meeting with students twice a week in one-on-one or small group settings to help strengthen their reading skills. This role comes with continuous training, ongoing support at select school sites in West Baltimore and Cherry Hill.

Where do we Volunteer

We target schools within high-need communities where a significant portion of K-3 students are below grade level in reading.​Currently at 5 BCPSS Sites: Thomas Jefferson Elementary, New Song Academy, Wildwood Elementary/Middle School, Garrett Heights Elementary, and Harlem Park Elementary School.

What are the requirements?

  • Age: 50 or older
  • Education: High school diploma or GED minimum
  • Commitment: At least two days per week during the school year for tutoring sessions, preparation time, and follow-up documentation of session outcomes
  • Timing: Hours between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday
  • Screening: Submit official application, participate in a candidate interview, and pass a background check
  • Terms: Complete a volunteer agreement
