Job Title: Vice President of Equipment (Heavy Civil Construction)
Location: Houston, TX (On-site, Monday–Friday)
Job Type: Full-Time
Position Overview:
We are seeking a hands-on, operationally focused Vice President of Equipment to lead the strategic planning, acquisition, maintenance, and lifecycle management of a $50M+ heavy civil construction fleet spread across six business units. This senior leader will oversee hundreds of owned assets (dozers, excavators, pavers, graders, trenchers, pickups), manage a team of 12+ across three maintenance shops, and play a critical role in equipment uptime, project execution, and long-term growth. The ideal candidate brings deep heavy civil fleet expertise, a strong maintenance culture, and a passion for mentoring the next generation — all while thriving in a tight-knit, roll-up-your-sleeves environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Fleet Strategy & Capital Planning
- Direct the overall equipment strategy, ensuring alignment with operational goals, CAPEX forecasts, and company growth targets.
- Manage equipment lifecycle from purchase (including auctions/vendor deals) to disposal.
- Asset Management & Utilization
- Oversee owned fleet of heavy civil machinery alongside 250+ pickups and ~100 rental units, ensuring optimal utilization across all business units.
- Partner with field/operations leaders to anticipate future needs and resource demands.
- Maintenance Oversight
- Implement and oversee preventive maintenance and repair programs across three shops (2 in Houston, 1 in Colorado).
- Ensure VIP-level relationships with OEMs and manage warranty, parts, and service support.
- Budgeting & Financial Performance
- Lead multi-million-dollar equipment budgets, lifecycle costing, cost control initiatives, and ROI optimization.
- Provide transparent equipment pricing and planning to operations and project managers on upcoming CAPEX projects.
- Team Leadership & Culture
- Lead, mentor, and develop 12+ team members (maintenance managers, purchasing lead, invoicing, mechanics, and support).
- Foster a strong, relationship-driven culture — one that values collaboration on and off the job.
- Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all equipment meets OSHA, DOT, and internal safety requirements.
- Maintain complete documentation for inspections, certifications, and compliance reporting.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive experience managing heavy civil construction equipment, with 5+ years at a senior leadership level.
- Demonstrated experience managing an owned fleet valued at $50M+ across multiple operating entities.
- Deep knowledge of yellow iron/residential heavy equipment (dozers, excavators, pavers, trenchers, etc.).
- Proven success developing and managing preventive maintenance programs in a shop-based environment.
- Strong financial, budgeting, and lifecycle ROI management capability.
- Hands-on leader who thrives in the field/shop and is committed to mentoring teams.
- Experience with telematics, fleet management systems, and vendor/OEM negotiations.
- Strong cultural fit — relationship-driven, humble, team-oriented, and willing to “roll up your sleeves.”
Compensation & Benefits:
- Competitive executive salary based on experience
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- 401(k) retirement plan
- Paid holidays and PTO
- Opportunity to join a growing, highly collaborative team set to double in size over the next three years
