The Vice Dean of Academic Affairs serves as a senior academic leader for Long Island University (LIU) at Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine (LCVM), overseeing the academic programs, faculty appointment, promotions, and development, and overall academic experience for students and faculty. This position reports directly to the Dean and works in collaboration with other senior leaders and faculty to ensure alignment with the College of Veterinary Medicine's mission, vision, and strategic goals. The Vice Dean is responsible for enhancing the quality of the academic environment, promoting excellence in teaching and scholarship, and advancing the professional development of faculty.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES, DUTIES AND CRITICAL TASKS:
  • Represent the Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine (LCVM) at local, regional, and national meetings and organizations, and participate in College and University level committees.
  • Manage the implementation of the strategic plan goals, objectives, and policies for LCVM education, establish success metrics, and develop a corresponding evaluation plan.
  • Monitor and ensure faculty compliance with college, state, and federal regulations, as well as alignment with LIU LCVM mission priorities.
  • Oversee operations and organizational effectiveness of all academic and assigned administrative units.
  • Oversee all aspects of veterinary medicine education, including cultivating a dynamic and innovative environment while supporting the recruitment and development of a highly qualified student body.
  • Lead the implementation, evaluation, and oversight of faculty affairs policies, processes, and procedures, including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, promotion, retention, sabbaticals, offboarding, retirement, and disciplinary actions.
  • Conduct classroom faculty observations to identify physical, technical, and educational resources needed to support optimal student learning.
  • Organize leaders in faculty development across education, clinical care, research, and community impact to create a coordinated system for faculty development.
  • Lead efforts to collect and report faculty data, including annual composition data and information related to accreditation activities.
  • Provide orientation and coaching to faculty on LIU LCVM policies, faculty evaluation, promotion, career advancement, honors, awards, and professional development.
  • Offer faculty-focused support and development opportunities that enhance faculty satisfaction and engagement, enabling faculty members to thrive both personally and professionally.
  • Cultivate a positive, collaborative, and generative culture in alignment with the LIU values.
  • Provide support and deliver best practices in education and development to department chairs, the LCVM Appointment and Promotion Committee, and faculty regarding career advancement.
  • Oversee agreements and collaborations with affiliates, partners, and other institutions.
  • Support the Office of Assessment.
  • Develop and manage assigned budgets.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources in faculty counseling and management of faculty grievance and appeals processes in alignment with Long Island University, Lewyt College of Veterinary Medicine mission areas.
ACCOMPANYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build consensus and drive initiatives in a collaborative and inclusive manner.
  • Deep understanding of academic veterinary medicine, including trends, challenges, and best practices.
  • Familiarity with compliance and reporting requirements for accreditation (AVMA-COE Standard 4- Clinical Resources, Standard 9 -Curriculum and Standard 11- Outcomes Assessment).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage complex administrative functions and prioritize multiple competing demands.
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Terminal degree, i.e., DVM, Ph.D. or Ed.D. is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years' experience in a leadership role, preferably in academic affairs, faculty affairs or promotions.
  • Previous appointment as a faculty member.
  • Eligible for appointment at rank of Associate or Full Professor.
