The Veterinary Technician provides veterinary technical assistance to the University at Albany's centralized animal welfare program and its Laboratory Animal Research Facilities (LARF), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and University faculty, staff, and students while providing ethical and compliant care for animals used in research and teaching. Assist Laboratory Animal Research Facilities staff and Veterinarian(s) in performing animal care, compliance/regulatory functions, husbandry, process improvement, and other related tasks. Effectively communicate between appropriate persons/entities (investigators, staff, vendors, Regulatory Research Compliance, Environmental Health and Safety, regulatory bodies, inspectors, etc.).

Primary Responsibilities:

* Conduct work according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), IACUC policies, and the regulations of the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service. Under the direction of the Laboratory Animal Facility manager or director, perform various animal welfare-related responsibilities in compliance with all applicable regulations and University policies.

* Assist in the comprehensive post-approval monitoring program; identify risks and develop strategies to avoid institutional and researcher non-compliance.

* Work as an effective team member of Laboratory Animal Resources and fully support the University's Animal Welfare Program. Conduct daily rounds: examine, evaluate, treat, document, and communicate animal health issues. Manages the health surveillance and sanitization effectiveness programs.

* Create, maintain, and update training materials and informational resources (handouts, visual aids, formal and informal presentations) for animal users. Orient and train University at Albany animal users on functional procedures: barrier entry including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), material entry, sanitization, aseptic technique, rodent handling, and facility safety including emergency procedures. Raise awareness of unique research animal facility environmental hazards. Enforce/audit compliance to internal policies and raise awareness when policy violations occur.

* Partner with research personnel to provide information and best practices regarding the treatment of animals, disease control measures, and nutritional requirements.

* Ability to consistently interact with researchers and laboratory users in a positive and constructive manner. Provide skilled technical assistance in animal research methodologies in current and pending projects including pre-operative preparation and anesthesia, sample collection, and problem-solving.

* Serve as a resource for animal user questions. Connect researchers with the resources needed to fulfill their study objectives. Respond to requests for equipment, information, space, and special care and services in a timely manner. Manage inventory, place orders, and receive and stock materials.

* Participate in continuing education and training to grow in knowledge on topics related to the care and husbandry of laboratory animals and to keep up to date in the field (laboratory animal medicine, laws & regulations, chemical, and biological safety, environmental health and safety, occupational health and safety, controlled substance requirements, anesthesia/analgesia/surgery, bio-manipulation techniques, etc.).

Additional Responsibilities:

* As needed, generally during periods of low staffing, supports the most functional elements of Laboratory Animal Resources by participating in husbandry, cage wash, and facility sanitization.

* Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

* Associate degree in veterinary/animal science from a college or university accredited by the U.S Department of Education or an internationally accrediting organization

* Minimum one year of experience working in a research environment with mice and rats

* Ability/willingness to participate in emergency on-call, weekend, and/or after-hours work

* Proficiency in veterinary techniques, including animal handling, anesthesia, surgical preparation, blood collection, and dosing.

* Ability to comprehend and follow SOPs and written instructions

* Ability to work with Microsoft suite, PP presentations, record-keeping, e-mailing, following instructions, and communicating effectively with others in multiple formats.

* Ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions and to self-schedule, meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality

* Ability to work independently and in a team, contributing to a positive work environment and to interact professionally with people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and attitudes. Training of novice and experienced employees, including non-native English speakers. Ability to work in ABSL-1, -2 areas and with chemical hazards

* Position requires the ability to lift at least 25 pounds and frequently lift or move up to 50 pounds

* Ability to pay close attention to detail, perform accurate dosing calculations independently, and perform quality record-keeping

Preferred Qualifications:

* AALAS certification (LAT or LATg)

* LVT (licensed veterinary technician)

* Familiar with zebrafish husbandry and care

* Ability to comprehend written and spoken English terms used in a biomedical research environment

* Ability to communicate medical issues in written and oral formats

* Ability to maintain a conscientious attitude and concern for quality and animal welfare
