South Coastal Animal Health is seeking an experienced Technician and a Technician Assistant to join our busy, 12-doctor, AAHA-accredited, small animal and exotic practice located south of Boston in Weymouth MA. We are looking for a team player who is friendly, outgoing, and people-oriented, who has excellent communication and client/patient service skills. Responsibilities include, technician appointments, preparing vaccines, phlebotomy, radiology, dentistry, IV catheter placement, anesthetic monitoring, and surgical preparation of patients. Duties
- Prepare for office hours by stocking drawers in exam rooms and treatment area, stocking vaccines in rooms, assuring that drugs and equipment are ready for use.
- Provide restraint of pets for examination by the veterinarian.
- Prepare medications (both injections and other dispensed medications) for outpatient, hospitalized, and surgical cases.
- Ensure a smooth timely flow of appointments from the point of check-in until the time of discharge.
- Help veterinarians administer anesthetics, prepare patients for surgery, monitor patients during surgery and recovery, assist in surgery, administer fluids (both subcutaneously and intravenously), and administer post-op therapy and medications.
- Properly clean, pack, and autoclave all surgical materials after they are used. Keep the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Help the veterinarian treat patients, assist in medical treatments and procedures, such as abscess repair and wound irrigation, wound cleansing, and bandaging. Perform all “tableside” assistance to the veterinarians.
- Clinical Lab procedures such as prepare fecal samples, heartworm tests, skin scrapings, slide prep, urinalysis, fungal cultures, blood draws for outside lab analysis. Prepare sample submission forms and the sample for shipment to outside labs. Perform other in-house testing such as FIV/FELV tests, parvo tests, and in-house blood work.
- Acquire and Develop all radiographs
- Assist kennel staff in keeping all patients clean and dry at all times. Ensure that all patients are comfortable and well-kept is the responsibility of all employees, but especially the technicians.
- Admit and discharge patients on the veterinarian's orders, being especially careful to ensure that patients being discharged are well groomed and in a medically appropriate state. Answer client questions one-on one on various aspects of animal care up to, but not including controversial items and/or those best left to the veterinarians. Pass on information/advice from the vets; explain dosage/purpose of medications; reinforce through discussion the proper care and procedures that should be followed at home. Inform client when they should return for follow-up care or recheck appointment.
- Conduct medical call-backs with clients concerning certain patients; recommend additional visit if patient's progress does not appear to be satisfactory.
- Assist the receptionists when necessary and assume their duties during their absence if and when needed.
- Maintain an appropriate inventory of all supplies as dictated by the inventory control system. Inform appropriate staff members as needed when products need to be ordered. At the very least be sure to write down inventory needs/requests in the order book.
- Be sure to rotate pharmacy supplies while restocking, check the expiration date, and remove any expired inventory from use.
- Keep up-to-date on all heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives, so you are making the most current recommendations to our clients and their pets.
- Complete all tasks on the treatment board in a timely fashion, make sure to record everything you do on treatment sheets.
- When pending, check fungal cultures daily and record the results, notify the doctor of any changes.
Skills
- Strong knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, and physiology.
- Experience with animal handling, including dog handling and restraint techniques.
- Familiarity with dental terminology and procedures related to veterinary dentistry.
- Background in animal husbandry and critical care practices.
- Proficiency in laboratory techniques relevant to veterinary medicine.
- Ability to perform animal catheterization and monitor anesthesia during procedures.
- Knowledge of pet grooming practices is beneficial.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with pet owners and team members.
- A commitment to providing high-quality pet care in a compassionate manner.
- Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory tests.
- Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.
- Knowledge of sterilization techniques to sterilize various instruments and materials.
- Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in the full variety of treatments to make preparations and provide “tableside” assistance.
