The Governor Morehead School for the Blind (GMS) is seeking applicants for a Vehicle Equipment Operator for the Maintenance department. Governor Morehead School is a residential school, responsible for providing educational instruction to visually impaired students in grades K-12 from across North Carolina.Work in this class involves the operation of vehicles and/or equipment in support of GMS. Position may operate a variety of vehicles/equipment in the performance of daily tasks, or may specialize in the operation of specific types of vehicles/equipment. Position areas supported may include but are not limited to: grounds maintenance, solid waste hauling, mail transport, cargo transport, etc. Positions may supervise temporaries or court-secured individuals in the performance of tasks. Safely and skillfully operates standard vehicles and/or equipment, which may include but is not limited to car, van, delivery truck, bus, tractor, mower, and various grounds maintenance equipment, in the performance of recurring tasks with established parameters and limited variety. Keeps vehicles or equipment clean, checks and maintains proper fluid levels. Identifies and informs supervisor of potential safety problems. Uses appropriate protective equipment in a safe manner. Reports needed repairs to supervisor. To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Qualified candidates must document on the application that they possess all of the following:* Working knowledge of vehicle/equipment utilized in performance of daily tasks. * Ability to perform pre-operational checks of vehicles/equipment. Ability to accurately maintain standard mileage, cargo, and/or cash receipt records.* Ability to recognize emergency situations and follow appropriate procedures. * Working knowledge of applicable traffic laws and other established regulatory requirements for performance of daily tasks. * Ability to carry out oral and written instructions.Some state job postings say you can qualify by an equivalent combination of education and experience. See oshr.nc.gov/experience-guide for detail.High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Physical Requirements: HEAVY WORK - Exerting up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Work may be performed outside during all types of weather conditions. Position must be capable of working from elevated work platforms up to 60 feet in height.
