A Day in the Life of a Union Utility Worker

You'll play a key role in keeping Oakmont's water systems running smoothly and safely. From inspecting equipment and maintaining treatment systems to responding to emergency repairs, your work ensures that residents have clean, safe water every day. You'll work closely with a team of skilled professionals in a supportive, safety-focused environment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Inspect and monitor pumps, motors, valves, and filters for proper function
  • Collect and test water samples for chlorine levels, pH, turbidity, etc.
  • Clean and maintain plant components, including chemical feed systems and filters
  • Record operational data for compliance and reporting
  • Safely handle water treatment chemicals like chlorine and lime
  • Identify abnormal system conditions and report them to supervisors
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on water treatment systems
  • Follow safety procedures, including PPE use and lockout/tagout protocols
  • Assist with emergency responses like water main breaks or equipment failures

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in a medium to large-scale municipal or public water distribution system
  • Valid driver's license
  • Valid Class E Distribution License is required for this role
  • Willingness to join Local 211 Utility Workers of America
  • Available to work overtime and emergency hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Willingness to follow union safety standards and job progression training
  • Strong teamwork and communication abilities
