Position: Assistant Professor of Trumpet

Salary: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience

Position Summary:The Department of Music seeks an experienced trumpet teacher and professional performer appointed at the assistant professor (tenure-track) level commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will be a trained classical performer, active professional musician, and pedagogue who also has experience teaching in non-classical styles (jazz, improvisation, etc.) and embraces the aesthetic and educational value of both classical and non-classical trumpet performance. The successful candidate will provide leadership in the brass area; teach lessons and studio classes to trumpet students in the MM, BFA, and BA programs; teach courses related to brass performance and pedagogy; oversee brass area outreach events to attract potential students, pre-college students, and community members; connect with area secondary brass programs and brass instructors to recruit students for UWM and provide support for regional brass education; maintain an active schedule of research and/or creative activity (including public performance); and participate in a full range of faculty governance and service activities within the University, the College of the Arts and Architecture, the Peck School of the Arts, and the Department of Music.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated high-quality, professional-level trumpet performance skills
  • A doctoral degree in trumpet performance and/or pedagogy, or equivalent professional experience and a master's degree
  • An established record of professional trumpet performance experience at the national and international level as a soloist, chamber musician, and/or large ensemble musician
  • Research, presentations, and publications as well as a history of recognized awards or honors in the field of trumpet performance
  • Evidence of training, performance, and/or teaching in classical and non-classical styles
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills, including work as a chamber musician with faculty colleagues and/or in professional settings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in trumpet performance and/or pedagogy
  • At least five academic years of successful trumpet teaching with four or more years in a collegiate setting and at least two academic years of full-time employment as a collegiate instructor
  • A documented record of successful recruitment of collegiate trumpet majors
  • Demonstration of a clear and engaging teaching style that encourages high standards and technically sound, healthy, stylistically informed, and expressive playing
  • Knowledge of relevant technologies and entrepreneurship for a 21st-century musician
  • The ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in working with a diverse group of students and colleagues.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating and sustaining an inclusive environment both inside and outside of the classroom
  • Exemplary standards of professional ethics and collegiality
  • Active participation and leadership in relevant professional organizations

Specific tasks and duties:

  • Teach trumpet lessons and studio classes to students in the MM, BFA, and BA programs
  • Proactively recruit, retain, and maintain an active studio of applied trumpet students
  • Teach the following courses as needed: Brass Ensemble, Advanced Chamber Music, Brass Repertoire, Brass Pedagogy and Techniques, Additional courses related to the candidate's expertise.
  • Connect with area secondary instrumental programs and brass instructors, actively recruit potential undergraduate and graduate trumpet majors, and coordinate brass area recruitment activities
  • Participate in Music Department faculty meetings, UWM and Music Department committees, and other areas of service to the department, college, school, and university
  • Engage, remain active, and be involved in the Milwaukee music community, both on and off campus as a professional performer and pedagogue

  • A 10–15 minute video recording of the candidate teaching a trumpet lesson or masterclass, submitted using links to video (Upload to other document 1)
  • 20–30 minutes of video recordings of solo trumpet performance by the candidate, showing diverse repertoire. Candidates can provide links to solo and/or chamber performance recordings (e.g., YouTube) showcasing complete works or movements that demonstrate contrasting styles, all within the past two years (Upload to other document 2)
  • 1-2 page Teaching Philosophy Statement
  • A document containing the names of three professional references, including contact information (email address, phone number, and mailing address).
