University Associate Director Of Credit For Prior Learning

The City University of New York's (CUNY) Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) at the Central Office seeks a strategic, equity-driven, and results-oriented University Associate Director of Credit for Prior Learning (CPL). This pivotal role will advance CUNY's CPL initiatives across the University's community colleges, with a focus on expanding access for adult learners and aligning CPL pathways with high-demand industries in New York City such as healthcare, business, education, and technology. Reporting to the University Director of Credit for Prior Learning, the University Associate Director will lead the design, integration, and expansion of CPL models and policies that are transparent, equitable, and designed to accelerate student degree and credential attainment.

This position requires demonstrated experience in academic policy, workforce-aligned education, and stakeholder engagement, as well as the capacity to lead system-wide initiatives with measurable impact. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Implement and scale CPL models across CUNY community colleges, in alignment with academic policy and industry standards.
  • Develop and operationalize CPL frameworks (e.g., portfolio assessment, credit by exam, industry certifications) that recognize prior learning and workforce training.
  • Map CPL opportunities to credit-bearing degree and certificate programs, particularly in priority sectors aligned with New York City's workforce needs.
  • Manage cross-campus initiatives, including CPL learning communities and faculty/staff working groups, to foster knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Drive alignment of CPL practices with CUNY policy, state and federal regulations, and national best practices (e.g., CAEL standards, ACE recommendations).
  • Establish and strengthen partnerships with academic departments, college leadership, advisors, and faculty to expand CPL adoption and institutional readiness.
  • Engage with external stakeholders, including employers and credentialing bodies, to evaluate workforce-aligned learning for credit eligibility.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report CPL implementation data, identifying usage trends, equity gaps, and opportunities for targeted expansion.
  • Develop strategic communications, reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences to highlight CPL outcomes, challenges, and impact.
  • Oversee the creation of CPL-related resources, including training materials, student communications, and digital tools that promote awareness and engagement.
  • Lead efforts to market CPL opportunities to adult learners and nontraditional student populations in collaboration with campus and university-wide partners.

Note:

  • Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.
  • This position is contingent on funding to be renewed on an annual basis, with current funding due to end 6/30/26.
Qualifications

Minimum: Bachelor's degree and six years of related experience required.

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in higher education, public administration, workforce development, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing academic policy, student support services, curriculum development, and/or credit evaluation in a higher education setting, preferably at the community college level.
  • Working knowledge of Credit for Prior Learning models and frameworks, including CAEL standards, ACE credit evaluations, and military or industry-based credentialing systems.
  • Familiarity with New York City's workforce landscape, high-demand industries, and pathways towards economic mobility.
  • Strong organizational and project management expertise, including experience leading multi-stakeholder initiatives across institutions or systems.
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including facilitation and diverse stakeholder engagement.
  • Commitment to educational equity, adult learner success, and improving outcomes for adult learners and underrepresented populations.

Compensation And Benefits

The salary range is $84,011 - $91,922 commensurate with credentials, education, and experience. CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
