Job Description:We are seeking a seasoned Health Insurance Underwriter to lead risk evaluation and premium development for the Affordable Care Act, group and Medicare supplement products. This role involves conducting in-depth risk assessments, analyzing claims trends, and collaborating with actuarial, compliance and sales teams to drive strategic underwriting decisions. The underwriter will oversee one risk specialist, support the development of underwriting models, and contribute to forecasting and budgeting efforts. Ideal candidates will have more than five years of health underwriting experience, strong analytical skills, and the ability to travel for onboarding and key stakeholder engagements.

Responsibilities:
  • Analyze and evaluate risk factors to establish appropriate premium rates.
  • Review and approve underwriting decisions within designated authority limits.
  • Conduct risk assessments for group and Medicare supplement health plan accounts.
  • Provide insights on risk profiles and recommend strategies to mitigate adverse selection.
  • Support the development of underwriting models in collaboration with internal and external actuarial services.
  • Provide detailed analysis and reporting on underwriting decisions to internal stakeholders and prepare regular reports on underwriting performance and risk trends for leadership review.
  • Analyze claims experience and trends to inform underwriting decisions and contribute to forecasting and budgeting processes.
  • Work with the compliance team to ensure adherence to regulatory standards.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance underwriting processes and implement best practices.
  • Partner with sales and marketing teams to support new business opportunities and renewals.
  • Develop and implement underwriting guidelines, processes and procedures.
  • Oversee the work of one risk specialist.
Requirements:
  • Availability and interest in traveling onsite for initial training (approximately one week), with additional potential travel to build relationships with stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, actuarial science or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in health insurance underwriting, with a focus on risk assessment.
  • Advanced degree or professional certifications (e.g., ASA, FSA, RHU, CRM) (preferred).
  • Strong analytical skills and proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Excel, SQL).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of health plan operations, products and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience collaborating with internal and external actuarial services and sales departments.
  • Proficiency in Excel and MedInsight (preferred).
Pay Range:

The anticipated pay range for this position is $40.00 - $44.00 hourly.
