Background: UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN Women Legal Office provides high-quality legal advice and support to the UN Women Executive Director, senior management, HQ units, and country offices on a wide range of legal matters, including:

  • Legal status, authorities, privileges, immunities, and relationships with UN Women Governing Bodies, Programme Countries, and Partner Governments;
  • Corporate, commercial, and private law matters, including legal support for financial and procurement operations;
  • Administrative law matters relating to staff relations, including HR management issues.

Under the supervision of the Chief, Legal Office, the Legal Specialist will provide legal advice to UN Women management and offices worldwide.

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal advice on human resources management, including staff regulations, rules, procedures, and internal justice matters.
  • Offer expert support on issues related to sexual exploitation and abuse, harassment, discrimination, and enforcement of UN Women's zero-tolerance policy.
  • Assist with investigations, disciplinary matters, and criminal accountability, including review of investigation reports and management of cases.
  • Prepare responses to management evaluation requests and UN Dispute Tribunal (UNDT) applications, representing UN Women as necessary.
  • Contribute to policy development, legal instrument review, and systemic improvements.

The incumbent performs other duties as needed for the effective functioning of the Office.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Law required; a first-level degree with additional experience may be accepted.
  • Minimum 5 years of legal practice experience, preferably with international organizations or in UN-related legal matters.
  • Experience with UN staff regulations, disciplinary procedures, and court or tribunal proceedings is desirable.

Languages: Fluency in English required; knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
