General Job Summary:

This is a full-time, grant funded, 205-day position on the Estherville Campus. This position will recruit eligible students for TRIO-SSS program participation. The Advisor initiates and coordinates activities to offer support to students in the areas of academic advising, 4-year transfer, cultural and career exploration. This position requires some evening and weekend hours. Position is contingent on continued grant funding.

  • Recruit and interview eligible individuals for program participation and document eligibility.
  • Maintain a caseload of students (approx. 90-100), students may be from the Emmetsburg and Spencer campuses and /or online.
  • Assess student needs and develop a Student Success Plan. Assist with the transition to college life at Iowa Lakes Community College and to a transfer institution of choice.
  • Provide proactive advising to students on academic, financial, career, and transfer matters through workshops, program events, and individual advising.
  • Ability to recruit and establish student attendance/participation in tutoring, workshops, and activities.
  • Assist with completion of applications for transfer institutions, partnership programs, internships, financial aid, and scholarships.
  • Work closely with students to assure student persistence, completion, and transfer.
  • Maintain detailed records per program and grant specifications.
  • Maintain timely and accurate records including contact logs in Student Access, student individual files, and sign in sheets.
  • Assist with program evaluation – administer, collect, and compile student evaluations from workshops, cultural events, and campus visits.
  • Assure requirements of the TRIO-SSS grant are met.
  • Maintain professional relationships with Iowa Lakes Community College, TRIO professionals, TRIO alumni; financial aid officers; and maintain membership in the Iowa TRIO professional organization (Iowa TRIO/EOA).
  • Represent Iowa Lakes and TRIO in a professional manner.
  • Collaborate with project Director and staff in writing performance reports, participating in program evaluations, file review, monthly TRIO-SSS meetings, monthly individual meetings, and new student orientations.
  • Work within a team atmosphere to guarantee a student-focused environment.
  • Possess strong human relations skills and ability to effectively relate to diverse personalities.

  • Coordinate TRIO-SSS peer and professional tutoring component including: interviewing, training, collecting time sheets, and evaluations. Monitor tutoring schedules, grades, tutoring reports, and tutor attendance.
  • Plan, chaperone, and implement workshops, cultural enrichment opportunities, and 4-year campus visits.
  • Help plan and implement the BRIDGE program. Assist students with the transition to college the week before classes begin.
  • Monitor student participant grades and GPS's utilizing retention software.
  • Refer students and coordinate with Career Services to utilize career assessments and interest inventories when need is identified.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors to ensure student success.
  • Assist with updating information for the TRIO-SSS web site, social media pages, brochures, flyers, presentations, and other marketing materials.
  • Submit press releases to the marketing department.
  • Provide information and referrals to program participants regarding community resources.
  • Collaborate with other student organizations and departments on campus.

  • Communicate and collaborate with faculty for tutor referral and progress report follow-up.
  • Drive a 12-passenger van to student events.
  • Chaperone overnight trips for student activities.
  • Attend professional development and TRIO training opportunities.
  • Participate in voluntary and assigned committees of the College.
  • Other duties as assigned by the TRIO Director.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to utilize a personal computer for word processing, database tracking, accessing software, and various social media programs.
  • Ability to interpret grant guidelines and objectives.
  • Ability to organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities and adjust techniques accordingly.
  • Represent the College in a positive manner to employees, students, visitors, and the general public.
  • Must be enthusiastic and energetic in performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to utilize correct English, grammar, punctuation, and arithmetic.
  • Ability to read and understand written/oral instructions or communication.
  • Ability to efficiently perform tasks in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to assume responsibility; deal effectively with problems, and exercise good judgment when making decisions.
  • Ability to effectively relate to participants of diverse, social, and economic backgrounds.
  • Must exhibit a student-centered approach at all times.

  • Must have strong experience working with TRIO-eligible students.

  • Special Demands:

    Sedentary to light work. Position involves sitting most of the time, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally (10-33%). Stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion occasionally (10-33%). Walking, lifting and grasping frequently (34-66%). Talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work constantly (67-100%). Must have valid driver's license, good driving record and provide proof of insurance. Required to travel utilizing personal vehicle. Some evening and weekend work required.

    Employment with Iowa Lakes Community College is dependent upon successful passage of a criminal background check. Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Bachelor's Degree in counseling, education, sociology, psychology, student services or related areas required. Master's Degree preferred. Academic Advising and experience working in a TRIO program preferred.

    Salary: $42,475 for a 205-day contract
