Registered Nurse - Neuro-Progressive Care (Days)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse with specialized expertise in neurological care for our Neuro-Progressive Care Unit. This role focuses on managing patients requiring intermediate-level monitoring and care for complex neurological conditions. The ideal candidate will possess strong assessment skills and experience in managing neurosurgical and neurological patients who require close monitoring but not intensive care.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • Licensure: Active Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years of recent Neuro-Progressive/Stepdown or ICU experience.
  • Technical Skills: Epic electronic medical record system experience is REQUIRED.
  • Competency: Must complete a Neuro-Progressive competency exam upon offer acceptance.
  • Travel Policy: No local candidates within the facility's defined ineligible counties.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized nursing care to patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions requiring progressive level monitoring.
  • Perform comprehensive neurological assessments, including Glasgow Coma Scale, motor/sensory function, and cranial nerve assessments.
  • Monitor patients for changes in neurological status and implement appropriate interventions.
  • Manage patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs), intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring, and other neuro-specific devices.
  • Administer and titrate neuro-specific medications and monitor for side effects.
  • Provide education to patients and families regarding neurological conditions, treatments, and recovery expectations.
  • Collaborate effectively with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and the multidisciplinary team.

Unit & Patient Population Details

  • Patient Population: Patients with neurological conditions including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal disorders, seizures, and post-neurosurgical cases.
  • Clinical Focus: Neurological assessment and monitoring, management of neurosurgical patients, stroke care, and stepdown from ICU level care.
  • Care Environment: Specialized neuro-progressive care unit within a Level I Trauma Center and comprehensive stroke center.
  • Typical Conditions: Status post craniotomy, subarachnoid hemorrhage, ischemic/hemorrhagic stroke, spinal surgery, and complex seizure disorders.
  • Monitoring: Advanced neurological monitoring, telemetry, and intermediate-level care equipment.
  • Technology: Neuro-specific monitoring devices, infusion pumps for critical medications, and specialized neurological assessment tools.
  • Dress Code: Navy blue scrubs required
