Floating requirements: RNs will float to Med-Surg approximately 80% of the time to take a full patient assignment if there are no laboring patients. The facility is in a rural area and does not have many births. Department details: Labor and Delivery has 3 beds, postpartum has 3 beds, and the C-Section OR is located on the first floor. Birth statistics: Approximately 30 births per year. Common diagnoses include active labor, elective inductions, and low-risk pregnancies (37 weeks and above). Certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NRP. Drips used include Pitocin and Magnesium (only for send-outs). RNs will titrate drips according to policy. Staffing and support: No charge nurse; collaboration among RN staff. No nurse aides or surgical techs available. OB/Neonatologist availability: Responds within 15 minutes but is not in-house 24/7. Anesthesia is also available with a 15-minute response time.
