Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12 Hour Days Hours per Shift: 7 AM - 7 PM Experience: Minimum of 1 year in Labor and Delivery License: Active RN License required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NRP, C-EFM Must-Have: Intermediate EFM experience preferred Description: The position requires working in the Labor and Delivery department. Candidates must possess the required certifications: ACLS, BLS, NRP, and C-EFM. Intermediate experience with Electronic Fetal Monitoring is preferred, while advanced experience is highly valued. The unit has a total of 2 Labor and Delivery beds. If there is only one patient expected to go home within 24 hours, they will remain in the Labor and Delivery room. For stays longer than 24 hours, patients will be transferred to an acute care room. C-Sections are performed in the operating room, and recovery takes place in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit. Labor and Delivery nurses do not circulate in the operating room. Postpartum beds are primarily acute care beds. If only one patient is expected to go home within 24 hours, they will stay in the Labor and Delivery room, otherwise they will be moved to an acute care room. The unit experiences approximately 50 to 60 births per year. Patient-to-nurse ratios generally follow AWHONN guidelines, typically 1:1 but may vary to 1:2. Only one Labor and Delivery nurse is scheduled per shift. Common diagnoses include Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, and Advanced Client Age. High-risk patients are generally referred out. Nurses must be capable of working on the acute medical-surgical floor as well. Experience in neonatal, antepartum, Labor and Delivery, and postpartum care is required. Registered Nurses are required to titrate IV drips, including Insulin and Magnesium. There is a Charge Nurse responsible for the entire hospital during each shift. There are no nursing aides or surgical techs available on this unit. OB doctors are on-call after hours and can arrive within 20 minutes if needed. Anesthesia services are also on call 24/7. Respiratory equipment includes nasal cannulas and non-rebreather masks for emergencies. Registered Nurses on this unit are responsible for monitoring patients on Magnesium therapy. The Electronic Fetal Monitoring system used is Fetal Link. Shifts are typically scheduled in blocks, with a schedule completed four weeks in advance. Weekend requirements are typically every other weekend. Holidays may require filling in as needed. Floating to the acute medical-surgical unit may be required if there are no Labor and Delivery patients. There are no specific scrub color requirements, as long as attire is clean and professional. Department-specific orientation lasts for one day on the unit.
