Job Title: Labor and Delivery RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Labor and Delivery Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 7 PM - 7 AM Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum Years of Experience Required License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, NRP, Fetal Heart Monitoring Must-Have: - 15-17 births per month experience in Labor and Delivery - Ability to care for laboring patients, triaging, and mother-baby care Description: Unit specifics require BLS, NRP, and Fetal Heart Monitoring. The facility can cancel one shift every other week. An OB nurse is needed for labor and delivery as well as mother-baby care, newborn nursery, and couplet care. Nurses will also care for gynecology surgery patients. Nurses may float to Med/Surg if there are no patients. If uncomfortable taking patients on the Med/Surg floor, nurses will assist with vitals, passing medications, etc. BLS, NRP, and Fetal Monitoring are mandatory requirements. Registered Nurses will likely work with Licensed Practical Nurses during shifts. Registered Nurses will handle all responsibilities within their scope for laboring patients, triage, and mother-baby care. Licensed Practical Nurses cannot labor or triage patients and cannot perform initial assessments. However, they can support the Registered Nurse with electronic fetal monitoring evaluations, turning patients, and assist with documentation. As the baby nurse, the initial assessment must be validated by the Registered Nurse. If additional help is needed, staff can request assistance from the Transfer Coordinator. In emergencies, the Licensed Practical Nurse typically accompanies the patient to the operating room to receive the baby, allowing the Registered Nurse to remain on the unit for potential triage arrivals. Being part of a small unit requires creativity in resource management, but excellent support and resources are available when needed.
