About Barton Health
Barton Health is a non-profit, community health system located on the south shore of beautiful Lake Tahoe at nearly 6,200 feet above sea level. The system includes a community hospital and Level III Trauma Center with 63 licensed acute care beds and 48 licensed long-term beds.
Position Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs testing in assigned areas, including chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology, and blood bank, to provide data for diagnosis and treatment of disease. This role requires comfort working independently, strong multitasking abilities, and adaptability to an environment with older processes and charting systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform, analyze, and report chemical, microscopic, microbiological, hematological, serological, and blood bank tests.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment; ensure quality control is met daily.
- Accurately document results and procedures, including manual blood bank using tube & gel systems and paper documentation.
- Set up and process Microbiology and PCR tests.
- Manage workload priorities and support overall lab workflow, including supply monitoring.
- Train, orient, and support other lab personnel when needed.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and licensing standards.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Current California CLS license.
- ASCP or AMT certification.
- Must apply for Nevada Medical Technologist (or General Supervisor) license prior to start; must obtain within 6 months.
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years as a generalist, including blood bank.
- Experience with Ortho, Sysmex, manual blood bank, and PCR setups preferred.
- Comfortable working independently within 2 weeks of start.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong organizational skills, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to adapt to high-volume workload with older charting systems (SoftLab).
- Proficient in multitasking and maintaining accuracy under pressure.
Work Conditions
- High-volume laboratory environment without a tube system for samples.
- Night shift will work independently (11:00 PM – 8:30 AM).
- Exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous materials.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs; frequent standing/walking.
Dress Code
- Solid color professional scrubs (navy blue preferred).
Compliance & Onboarding Requirements
- Resume with full education (month/year of graduation) & 7 years work history.
- Two recent professional references (one from a supervisor).
- Skills checklist (within 1 year).
- Online license verification, background check, and drug screen (no THC testing; THC oral swab on Day 1).
- Proof of required immunizations (MMR, Varicella, Tdap, Hep B, TB, Flu if in season) or signed declinations.
