Job SummaryThe Transfusion Service Lead is a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), with additional functions related to the supervision of the Transfusion Service and Serology sections of the NIH clinical laboratory. The Transfusion Service Lead is responsible for monitoring equipment, maintenance, quality control and records, troubleshooting, setting technical workflows, training, and competency assessment. The Transfusion Service Lead helps ensure compliance with The Joint Commission, AABB Standards, and state and federal law as it pertains to their area. The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is a professional state licensed position within the hospital clinical laboratory. A CLS is expected to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality in all areas involving patients and their related hospital business.Job Relationships
- Directly responsible to the Laboratory Services Manager
- This position works closely with all laboratory staff and may provide instruction.
- This position also works closely with Laboratory Medical Director, nursing and other patient care personnel, District departments and leadership, and internal and external customers

- All regular job duties of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist including:
- CLIA waived, moderate, and high-complexity testing in all sections of the laboratory
- Assessing quality and integrity of clinical specimens for testing; processes specimens and reports results according to SOP
- Participates in Proficiency Testing and maintains assigned competency assessments
- Oversees, reviews, troubleshoots, resolves, and maintains documentation of Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) related to Transfusion Services and Serology. Troubleshoots, resolves and documents QC/QA issues. Reports audits to departments and leadership when applicable.
- Oversees the maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repair of assigned Transfusion Service and Serology instrumentation and equipment. Ensures manufacturer-performed periodic/preventative maintenance is completed per warranty or service contract when applicable. Works with Laboratory Manager to ensure that service contracts are current and meet the needs of the District.
- Notifies and collaborates with Laboratory Services Manager (and the Laboratory Medical Director, when applicable) on problems in their section that could impact patient care.
- Oversees training and competency assessment for new and current staff in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- In collaboration with Laboratory Services Manager and Laboratory Medical Director, develops and maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to the Transfusion Service and Serology.
- Acts as point person for Chemistry during surveys/inspections with support from Laboratory Services Manager.
- Oversees maintenance of supplies and blood product inventory.
- Ensures reagents and quality control materials are within expiry and are stored appropriately.
- Collaborates with Laboratory Services Manager, providers, and other NIHD leadership to provide an optimal test menu for NIHD and community.
- Assigns Proficiency Testing (PT) specimens within the scope of Transfusion Services and Serology to appropriate personnel and ensures results are reported to PT agency on time. When PT results are unacceptable, performs investigation and corrective action to be reviewed by Laboratory Services Manager and the Laboratory Medical Director (Pathologist).
- Adheres to Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and completes variance reports (QVR and/or UOR) when deviations occur.
- Maintains current State of California Clinical Laboratory Scientist licensure
- Other duties as assigned.

ExperienceMinimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of laboratory training and/or experience in high-complexity testing in the specialty of Transfusion Services/Blood Banking
- Minimum 1 year of experience in high-complexity testing in the specialties of Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Serology, and Microbiology (this position has generalist responsibilities)
Education
- Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology (must meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing)
Certification
- Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist License

- At least 1 year of experience in the NIHD Clinical Laboratory
