DescriptionUnder immediate supervision, performs complex skilled and technical work in the operation maintenance and installation of traffic control and traffic signal system devices; does related work as required.Examples of DutiesAssists in the daily operation of the traffic signal system, monitors the traffic signal system for errors or failures and assist in the repair and maintenance of the system, updates and maintains complex computer files; monitors real time traffic operations through video sources to report incidents and special event information to the appropriate agencies; assists in the installation, relocation and maintenance of traffic control devices including controllers, computers, computer interface units, etc; assists with the maintenance of communication cable and fiber optic systems; uses complex equipment to troubleshoot computer system equipment including computers, computer related equipment, cameras, camera control and interface units; sets up, cleans, tests, and maintains controllers, coordinators, computer interface units, cameras, and other electrical and electronic control equipment.Assists in the collection of traffic data such as speed, delay and turning movement counts for engineering studies; assists in the design and drafting of traffic signal plans; assists the public in traffic signal complaints and supplying traffic signal data, and helps coordinate signal repairs between the departments and field technicians.Typical QualificationsEducation and Experience: Graduation from a two or four year college or university with a major in Civil or Computer Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to traffic signal operations, electronics and computers, with considerable experience in the electronics or computer interfacing field.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of traffic signal system operations, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices, data communications, and computerized traffic signal systems equipment. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic signal timing and microcomputer applications of traffic signal optimization software. Working knowledge of AutoCAD or MICROSTATION and PC-based programs including MS Office; GIS and various software programs for traffic optimization and traffic analysis. Knowledge of the terminology, methods, practices, and techniques of engineering and drafting design. Ability to work outside under inclement weather conditions.Supplemental InformationPossession of a valid North Carolina driver's license; ability to pass a color vision test. IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level II desired, knowledge of fiber optic systems desired; ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
