Salary: $3,042.00 MonthlyLocation : San Antonio, TXJob Type: Full-time RegularJob Number: 2025-02148Department: Public WorksOpening Date: 08/15/2025Closing Date: Continuous Summary The Traffic Operations Technician I position is an entry-level role within the Bexar County Public Works Traffic Management division. This technician will perform basic tasks under direct supervision, contributing to the safe and efficient operation of traffic systems within Bexar County. Duties and Responsibilities
- Assists senior technicians with the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices following the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) guidelines.
- Performs basic maintenance on traffic control equipment and tools.
- Maintains accurate daily work logs and reports.
- Assists with traffic control setup for construction and maintenance projects.
- Sets up and removes traffic cones, barricades, and other safety devices.
- May operate department vehicles for transporting materials and equipment.
- Assist with manual manufacturing and assembling of signs.
- Assists Traffic Operations Technicians II with the installation, maintenance, and repair of complex traffic control devices.
- May assist Pavement Marking Technicians with painting stripes on roads and crosswalks.
- Maintains a clean and organized work area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from High School or General Education Development (GED) certificate and one (1) year of general maintenance or mechanical experience; additional education in a related field may be substituted for experience.
- Knowledge of the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) guidelines; knowledge of basic electrical and mechanical operations.
- Skill in the operation of basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; knowledge of safety standards and practices; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees and the general public.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools relating to the fabrication of various traffic control devices; ability to plan a sequence of operation and select proper tools and materials; ability to operate a 2,000 pound forklift; ability to follow safety standards and practices.
- Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance.
- Must clear a pre-employment physical and a pre-employment drug screen test.
- Must have a valid Texas driver's license.
- May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek.
- Required to be on-call 24-hours a day.
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
- Working conditions are primarily outdoors.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
- Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperature variations (i.e. rainy and icy conditions), dirt, dust, fumes, vapor, smoke, unpleasant odors, hazardous chemicals, overhead power lines, loud noises, insect and/or animal bites.
- Frequently moves equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, occasionally moves objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Will frequently communicate with co-workers; must be able to exchange accurate information.
- Constantly positions self to perform essential functions.
- Constantly operates tools and equipment.
